As a franchise, Persona is an emotionally significant game for so many. What does this character mean to you?
More than why do you want to write as them, but why are they special to you?
I can honestly sympathize with and relate to Yukari pretty hard, and from the start of the movies I felt a strong connection to her. She’s popular and outgoing at school but no one realizes how introverted and skeptical she actually is. The loss of her father and watching her mother try and move on also puts a lot of mental strain on her from a young age, and it shows with her trust issues and mood swings more often than not. The intense drive she has to fulfill her father’s last wish is also something that I find to be incredibly honorable, and the way she pushes on bravely even when the rest of the S.E.E.S. members show hesitation really hammers home her commitment to this cause.
If there was something you could change about your character in-game,
What would it be and why?
Honestly Yukari’s dynamic is something I find that makes her a compelling character, even though her mood swings make for some dicey situations. The only thing I’d remotely want to change about her is for her to be a bit more cautious in certain situations. Her bravery knows almost no bounds, and that’s not always a good thing. Some view it as her being too overconfident, and even reckless in some situations. Exercising a certain level of caution would also give her more time to come up with a plan of action versus diving in unprepared.

Another arrow sunk into the target with a heavy thud, Yukari finally exhaling the breath she’d been holding in relief. All three arrows had landed right within the bullseye, as she’d hoped for, the crowd of other members giving little cheers as she lowered her bow.
“Nice shot, Yukari!” “Leave it to the Archery Club ace to make it look so easy.” “How is your aim always so steady??”
The compliments were taken in with her signature smile, chocolate irises scanning around the group slowly. Most of the faces she recognized fairly well, though some were newer recruits she hadn’t met yet. Suffice to say she was pretty pleased to already be making a good impression on the underclassmen joining in.
“It just takes lots of time and practice,” she responded easily, moving towards the mat to grab her arrows. Most of the group dispersed then, conversing about Yukari’s ‘natural talent’ as they made their way to class; the clock on the wall ticked away endlessly, moving closer to the start of their first period. With the building mostly empty the brunette’s smile faded, the girl tugging out the arrows and heading into the locker rooms to change.
Out in the hallway her smile was plastered back onto her face, directed whichever way a voice called to her from:
“Good morning, Yukari! Hey, Yukari, nice job at the rehearsal last night! Wanna sit with us at lunch today, Yukari?”
A simple wave was the most these conversations were usually given, but that was enough for the populace; Yukari Takeba was known as the charming, outgoing second year of Gekkoukan High from a distance, and she planned to keep it that way.
One voice however stuck out from the crowd; his low timbre rang obnoxiously into her ears, and it made her have to work to keep the smile from becoming a small scowl.
“Oi, Yukari!”
Junpei rounded the corner with his arm outstretched, hand waving erratically and crooked smile stretching across his face. Did he not realize how goofy he looked when he acted like that?
“What’s got you so excited, Stupei?” The nickname slipped out without Yukari even thinking about it; to her it was more memorable than his actual name. Go figure.
“What’s there not to be excited about? Summer break starts next week!”
She couldn’t stop herself from rolling her eyes, fairly certain she knew where his mind was wandering; girls on the beach, girls in swimsuits, and girls all around. Typical Stupei.
“Does that mean I should keep count of how many times you get slapped for acting like a creep?” Just imagining it grated on her nerves a bit, but what else did she expect from him? He fancied himself a ‘ladies man’, after all. “The sooner you learn to lay off, the better off you’ll be.”
“The only one who’ll be slapping me is you and you know it.” For some reason his tone made it sound like he might deserve it, and Yukari couldn’t help but feel slightly smug over that. At least Junpei knew when he was beat.
Realization dawned on her as soon as the two made their way into class, confusion marring her expression for just a moment. It was so easy for her to slip right back into her everyday mask; going through the motions of being the outgoing, extroverted popular girl she was known for came all too naturally to her. But being like this, around someone who brought out the sides of her she usually kept under wraps felt...nice. Junpei hadn’t seen her at her worst, when she was locked inside of her room, hoping to just waste away out of existence, but he was closer than most.
As she finally sat down at her desk Yukari thought to herself...maybe letting some people in like that wasn’t so bad after all.
